punished with the strap, placed in an isolated cell and put on a diet of bread and water.

An attempted carjacking in the Cooper-Young neighborhood early Monday morning led to a chase while also prompting Memphis police to launch a helicopter to search for the suspects, officials said.

The incident began a few minutes after midnight at 2157 Central, the parking lot of the small shopping center that includes Urban Outfitters.

An officer working that area pulled into the lot to update his logsheet when he noticed a white SUV parked nearby. The officer heard three loud bangs, police said, then pulled around to where the driver of the SUV was trying to flee in reverse.

Three suspects were running beside the car, attempting to get inside while the driver was still going in reverse, police said. The officer turned on his lights and sirens, and the suspects fled on foot. The officer pursued a 17-year-old, eventually taking him into custody in the parking lot. The other two suspects were last seen running east on York toward Meda.

The two people in the SUV told police that they were parked in the lot when the three suspects came running up. One of them began hitting the front passenger-side window with a brick. After the window shattered, a second suspect pulled out a gun. The driver then slammed the car into reverse to try to get away, but the suspects began running alongside and trying to open the door, police said. No injuries were reported.
