Germantown golfer falls in Senior Amateur

Germantown golfer lost to of Taylorsvil­le, Illinois, 1 up on Wednesday in the U.S. Senior Amateur semifinals at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.

Against Jackson, Ryan won the 14th to take a 2-up lead, lost the 15th with a bogey and matched Jackson with a par-birdie-par finish to close the match.

Jackson beat of Los Angeles in 19 holes to reach the semifinals.

Jackson tied McClure with a 45-foot birdie putt on No. 17 and said on the USGA.org website: “I was very fortunate. You just try to stay in the hole and hit a putt with good speed on it. That’s all I was really trying to do — just trying to get it to the 18th hole.”

McClure told the website: “I’ve played with him off and on over the years. He’s hard to beat in these USGA championsh­ips.”

Ryan, 62, beat of Poughkeeps­ie, New York, 5 and 3 in the quarterfin­als. Sughrue, 57, from Arlington, Virginia, edged of Savannah, Georgia, 1 up in the quarterfin­als and beat of Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 19 holes in the semifinals.

Against Cahill, Sughrue lost 15 and 16 to fall 1 down, won the 18th with a par and won the match on the 19th with another par. Sughrue also rallied against Hanzel, winning 15 and 16 to take the lead and matching Hanzel with pars on the last two holes. each won two matches
