Sixteen tons of fun
OCT. 20, 1974: Tennessee Ernie Ford (center) and his Nashville-Opryland touring troupe, also dubbed the “Moscow-Nashville Express” after a recent goodwill tour of the Soviet Union, launched the 19th annual Holiday Inn World Conference at Holiday Inn-Rivermont. Several hundred Holiday Inn officials and franchise owners from 43 countries and territories attended the show.

Memphis State University’s Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law hasn’t yet been able to get past an obstacle in its path to national recognition. Law school officials very much want membership in the prestigious Association of American Law Schools (AALS). Gaining it would put MSU in a higher tier of law schools nationally. But late in 1990, their most recent try was deferred for another three years. It was MSU’s third attempt to become an AALS member.
50 years ago: 1966
The Motor Vessel Mississippi, largest and newest craft in the US Engineers’ fleet, was intentionally run onto a Mississippi River sandbar late yesterday after it hit a submerged object and started sinking. There were no injuries reported and the 217-foot boat was reported safely beached and tied to another Engineers’ boat last night opposite Lake Providence, La. This is about 43 miles south of Greenville, Miss.
75 years ago: 1941
Washington — The United States destroyer Kearney, which was torpedoed by a German submarine 350 miles south and west of Iceland three days ago, has docked at an undisclosed port with 11 of her crew missing and 10 others injured.
100 years ago: 1916
The two electric lighting and power companies yesterday declined to accept in their entirety either of the propositions submitted to them by Mayor Ashcroft and the commission for a proposed reduction for rates for current and gas.
125 years ago: 1891
Grading of the road-bed of the Raleigh Springs Railway begins today. This is a significant event. The road should have been built 20 years ago, but it is better late than never.
