Houston, Collierville reach soccer semis
Maddie Eskin and Abbie Rushwin each scored two goals as Houston opened defense of its AAA girls soccer championship with a 6-1 victory over McMinn County Wednesday in Murfreesboro.
Eskin got her first goal in the fourth minute of play as she followed home a rebound before adding her second just before halftime on a low shot from about 22 yards. The Mustangs (18-0-2) then pulled away after the break thanks to goals from Jenna Kemp and Bailey Rose before Rushwin got her two in the final 10 minutes.
Morgan Hutchison scored a 63rd minute goal for McMinn County (12-9-2), only the third goal Houston has allowed all season.
Shelby County's other representative also had a strong opener as Collierville defeated Lincoln County 3-0, handing the Falcons just their second loss of the year in 23 matches.
Holly Stalls scored in each half for the Dragons (163-3) while Kate Johnson added a goal off an assist from Kammy McGee.
In today's semifinals, Houston will meet Franklin (16-1-2) on Field No. 1 at Siegel Soccer Park while Collierville will take on Maryville (22-2-1) on Field No. 3. Both matches are at 4 p.m. with the winners advancing to Saturday's 11 a.m. championships match.
MOVE ON UP
East High will remain a AAA basketball school and a 4A football school after successfully petitioning the TSSAA to "play up."
East was re-classified as a 2A football school and Class A for all other sports when the TSSAA released its enrollment figures for the 2017-2021 school years. The Mustangs are the defending AAA basketball champions and figure to be strong contenders for at least the next two seasons.
Kirby was the only other Shelby County school to move up; the Cougars will remain a 5A football school after being re-classified as 4A
NO CONTEST
The TSSAA has officially ruled the Houston at Henry County football game a no-contest, leaving the Mustangs with a 4-4 record headed into Friday's regularseason finale against visiting White Station.
The teams met on Aug. 26 in Paris but played only one quarter before heavy rains forced a suspension of play.
