Deputy charged with domestic assault

A Shelby County sheriff’s deputy is off the job Sunday after he was arrested for allegedly committing domestic assault.

Deric Hoffman, 29, was arrested Saturday and charged with domestic assault. He was released without bond. According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Hoffman has been suspended with pay. SCSO spokesman Earle Farrell said Hoffman had been with the department less than two years.

According to an affidavit, Hoffman went to his estranged wife’s house Saturday afternoon; they are going through a divorce. He arrived with a cake, flowers and a card; she thought he was going to apologize for an argument they’d had a few days later, the affidavit said. Hoffman asked her to bring a knife and plate outside, but when the woman said she didn’t want any cake, he got upset, police said.

Hoffman then went inside the garage to try and peel a police sticker off his wife’s car, the affidavit said. When his wife tried to intervene, he pushed her down and pulled the knife from her hand, throwing it on the roof, the affidavit said. Police said that the woman had injuries to her hand where he removed the knife, and Hoffman had

Memphis police are investigating three separate stabbings in the city Sunday, although none of the three was fatal.

The first incident happened a little after 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning in the 2000 block of Alcy in the Southeast Memphis area, police said. Responding officers found a man suffering from a stab wound. A woman told police that she stepped outside and saw her son staggering around the corner of an adjacent apartment building. The woman initially thought her son was drunk, she told police, but then saw him collapse. He was taken to the Regional Medical Center in noncritical condition.

The victim told police that someone stabbed him in an attempted robbery. No arrests have been made.

The second incident happened about 7:45 a.m. in the 3700 block of Rangeline in the Frayser area, police said. A witness called police to report that a man who had been stabbed was bleeding at her door, but then he ran to the next house, police said. Responding officers found him there; he was taken to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

The victim told officers that he had been stabbed by his mother’s boythen friend. Irvin Franklin, 59, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

The third incident happened a little after 10:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Nedra in North Memphis, police said. Police said a father and son had an argument, leading the father to use pepper spray on his son. The son then stabbed his father multiple times, police said. The 50-year-old victim was taken to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The 22-year-old son is in custody, but no charges have been filed yet, police said.

Police arrest homicide suspect

Memphis police have arrested a second suspect in the slaying of a man shot to death in a store parking lot last year.

Donte Kerr, 20, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery in the death of James Morton, 25. Kerr is being held at the Shelby County Jail. Police had already arrested another suspect in the shooting, 20-year-old Keidrick Daniel. Daniel faces the same charges.

Morton was killed around 8:20 p.m. Nov. 5 in the parking lot of the Quick Mart convenience store at 1908 S. Lauderdale, police said. According to the affidavit, Morton was attempting to buy drugs from Kerr and Daniel. Kerr than attacked Morton and pinned him to the ground, the affidavit said. He tried to take items from Morton’s pocket, the affidavit said. Morton managed to free himself and try to run, the affidavit said, but Kerr shot him. Much of that was captured on surveillance video, according to police.

According to the affidavit, Daniel identified Kerr as the other person involved in the killing. Kerr denied his involvement, the affidavit said.

Police ID homicide victim; shooting ruled justifiable

Memphis police have identified a man shot to death Saturday after an argument over a car accident as Travis Johnson, 27.

Johnson was killed around 12:30 a.m. in a shooting near Barron and Will Scarlet in the Sherwood Forest area south of the University of Memphis. According to police, officers found Johnson on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

Police later discovered that Johnson’s Ford Explorer struck a parked Nissan Altima. An argument ensued between Johnson and the owner of the second car. Johnson pulled out a handgun and shot the owner of the second car, police said. The victim’s 26-year-old son then returned fire, killing Johnson.

Police said Sunday that this has been ruled a justifiable homicide, and no charges are expected.
