Day wants to play Masters, depending on mother’s prognosis: PGA Tour star Jason Day expects to arrive in Augusta, Georgia, on Friday to start practicing for the Masters, but said he could pull still out of the season’s first major, depending on his mother’s prognosis following surgery for lung cancer last week.

“Obviously, I’m still nervous because we’re still waiting to see … if it has spread or not,” said Day, who spoke Monday on a video conference set up by organizers of the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic in late April. “From there, we have to kind of come up with a game plan whether to go chemo — a form of chemo radiation — or something else.

“It’s still kind of a bit of an emotional time for me,” added Day, whose father, Alvin, died of cancer when he was 12. “Obviously, I’ve been hanging out with my mom a bit and seeing her and she’s recovering well. She’s a tough lady, but it’s hard because I look at her and she’s on the pain killers and all that stuff, what she needs to do to recover … but I can’t help but think of my dad when I see her in that situation.”

The world’s third-ranked golfer revealed that his mother, Dening, has cancer after withdrawing from the Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, last Wednesday. Day has said the initial diagnosis came in Australia at the beginning of this year and that she had scheduled surgery in Columbus, Ohio, late last week.

Day said Monday that doctors deemed the surgery successful, and now the family awaits results of tests to see if cancer is present in Dening Day’s lymph nodes.

Day said he “hasn’t touched a golf club at all” in the days since joining his joining his mother in Ohio last week.

“It’s very, very difficult to even think about playing golf when a loved one is going through such a traumatic experience,” Day said.

Seahawks’ Boykin arrested after crash: Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Trevone Boykin has been arrested in Dallas after police say he was in a vehicle that hit seven people on a sidewalk.

Jail records show the former TCU quarterback was booked early Monday on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and possession of marijuana. Bond was $500.

Police say a vehicle backed onto a sidewalk and struck seven pedestrians and a bar, slightly injuring a bartender. None of the injuries is life threatening. The female driver was arrested, accused of felony intoxication assault with a vehicle.

The Seahawks say they are “disappointed” and are gathering more information.

In 2015, Boykin was suspended for TCU’s Alamo Bowl game after his arrest following a bar fight. Last June, he pleaded no contest to resisting arrest and received a year’s probation.

Bears player calls Hernandez ‘my guy’ at murder trial: Chicago Bears wide receiver Deonte Thompson has testified in the double-murder trial of ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez.

The former New England Patriots tight end played football with Thompson at Florida.

Thompson testified Monday about a Florida party he invited Hernandez to in February 2013. Hernandez smiled when Thompson referred to him as “my guy.”

Thompson’s team, then the Baltimore Ravens, had just won the Super Bowl. Thompson said he remembers Hernandez introducing Alexander Bradley as “my homie” and said they appeared to be good friends.

Prosecutors say Hernandez shot Bradley days later because he feared Bradley would tell authorities he saw Hernandez kill two men in Boston in July 2012. Defense lawyers say Bradley shot the men over a drug deal.

Wounded USF player charged with pulling gun first: Authorities say a University of South Florida football player who was shot during a road rage incident has been charged with pointing a gun at the shooter and his family.

A Tampa police news release says 22-year-old Hassan Childs was charged Monday with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was arrested at a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The release says Childs had been tailgating Jovanni Jimenez about a mile from the USF campus on Saturday night. Jimenez, who was with his wife and 3-year-old son, told police he pulled over to let the other car pass, but Childs pulled up beside him and pointed a gun at him. Jimenez said he drew his own gun and fired three times.

Both Childs and Jimenez have active concealed weapons permits. It wasn’t clear if Childs had an attorney.

Orioles name Gausman opening day starter: The Baltimore Orioles will have a new starter for their April 3 opener for the first time in the last four years.

Manager Buck Showalter said Monday that right-hander Kevin Gausman to start against Toronto.

The move to start the 26-year-old Gausman wasn’t unexpected. Showalter had ruled righthander Chris Tillman out of the opener when spring training began last month because of a sore right shoulder. Gausman was 9-12 with a 3.61 ERA last season. Nationals release RHP Nathan, 8th all-time in saves: Veteran reliever Joe Nathan has been released by the Washington Nationals, ending his bid to make the team a week before opening day.

Nathan’s 377 career saves rank second among active pitchers and eighth in major league history.

The 42-year-old Nathan went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in only 61⁄3 innings with the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants last season as he worked his way back from a second Tommy John surgery to repair his right elbow.
