Two have been indicted in Raleigh fatal shooting
A 20-year-old man has been indicted on a charge of firstdegree murder in the killing of Yasne Tahiro in Raleigh.
Jaylon Jackson is charged with killing Tahiro in perpetration of a robbery attempt and a second defendant, 21year-old Reco Hall, is charged with facilitation, according to the office of the Shelby County District Attorney General.
Both men are being held without bond in the Jan. 22 incident. Tahiro was found in his crashed vehicle after authorities were called to the 3600 block of Prince John Cove and then to the 5300 block of Gloucester.
His family asked for help in finding the perpetrators and contributed to a $4,000 reward.
According to affidavits, Hall told law enforcement that he was present when the victim was shot and that he provided the weapon, and a witness identified Jackson in a photo lineup as the person responsible for shooting Tahiro.
Inmate charged in death of his cellmate at penal farm
An inmate has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder in the killing of his cellmate at the Shelby County Penal Farm.
Danielle Smith, 36, is charged with killing 22-year-old Lenord Nelson, who died of blunt force trauma to his head and neck May 31. An autopsy showed he was also cut in the neck, likely after his death, according to the office of the Shelby County District Attorney General. Nelson had been sentenced to one year, nine months and 21 days after pleading guilty to the sexual exploitation of a minor in April 2015. Smith was incarcerated for theft and aggravated burglary.
MPD arrests teen in 'bump and run' carjackings
Memphis police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with three "bump and run" carjackings on the interstates last week.
The teen has been charged with four counts of aggravated robbery, three counts of theft of property $10,000-$60,000 and theft of property $1,000 or less.
The incidents occurred March 28 and March 30 on Interstate 55 and Interstate 240.
Three drivers told police that they were rear-ended and when they got out to check the damage they were carjacked and robbed by the suspect and another person.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
MPD investigates two fatal shootings on Sunday night
Memphis police are investigating two homicides Sunday night where a man and a woman were killed in separate shootings.
According to police, around 6 p.m. officers found a 33-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of a home in the 1500 block of S. Highland.
The man was taken to the Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Witnesses told police they heard several shots and saw the victim collapse in front of the home on Highland.
Then, around 7:45 p.m., police responding to another call found a 25year-old woman with a gunshot wound at the Memphis Fire Department at 8395 Dexter in Cordova.
The woman was pronounced dead at fire station No. 58.
Police said the woman was involved in an altercation with other women at a home in the 1600 block of Wren Hollow Cove. Shots were fired and the victim was hit. Witnesses drove the victim to the fire station for help.
No arrests have been made in the homicides as police continue to investigate.
Police investigate report of assault on U of M campus
University of Memphis campus police and the Memphis Police Department are investigating a reported assault of a female resident of the Carpenter Student Housing Complex Saturday evening.
University interim police chief Derek G. Myers said Monday in an email, “A female contacted us yesterday afternoon (April 2nd) and reported she was assaulted by her guest the previous evening in the Carpenter Complex. We are investigating with the assistance of the Memphis Police Department.”
Myers added, “This is an active investigation and we will not be discussing details.”
