Superlo’s online pickups launch Downtown; more locations coming
Superlo Foods launched Downtown pickups for online grocery orders Monday.
The homegrown grocery chain’s Superlo on the Go service expanded to a pickup location at 552 S. Main.
Superlo has been offering online ordering with in-store pickups at 4744 Spottswood in East Memphis since February.
The Downtown site, just south of the Arcade restaurant at Main and G.E. Patterson, will initially be open 3-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, said J.R. Stepherson, who handles human resources and social media for family-run Superlo.
“For what we are trying to be, we feel the location is perfect,” Stepherson said. “Main Street is where everybody wants to be. You have a large number of apartments and condominiums nearby, and there’s enough parking to accommodate the customers.”
Superlo shares the South Main space, occupying the front while Energy Fitness’ gym takes up the back of the building.
Customers placing orders at superlofoods.com will be able to schedule next-day pickup at either Downtown or Spottswood. Store personnel will bring sacked groceries to customers at curbside.
Most customers are expected to use curbside, but South Main has some seating for walk-up customers.
Downtown pickups will cost $9.95 an order, compared with $4.95 on Spottswood, to cover transportation and handling.
Superlo on the Go will eventually expand to some of the other six Superlo locations, Stepherson said.
Online ordering services like Google Express are trying to make inroads in Memphis with home delivery of nonperishable items from stores including Kroger and Whole Foods. Superlo’s service is similar to Kroger’s ClickList.
Superlo’s website lists everything in the store except wine. Fresh produce, ice cream, cold beer, “You can get everything,” Stepherson said.
The family ran Stepherson’s Big Star groceries from 1950 to 1990, and family members started the Superlo chain 1993.
