FedEx is ramping up efforts to improve efficiency of its FedEx Express vehicle fleet.

FedEx announced a new goal of increasing vehicle fuel efficiency in its Express unit by 50 percent by 2025, from a 2005 baseline. The company reached the former goal of a 30 percent increase in efficiency in 2015 and hit 35 percent in the year ending last May 31.

The new goal was contained in the Memphis-based company’s 2017 Global Citizenshi­p Report, released this week.

The company has achieved a 22 percent reduction in aircraft emissions intensity since 2005, moving toward a goal of 30 percent by 2020, spokeswoma­n Rae Lyn Rushing said.

A continuing modernizat­ion of the aircraft fleet helped save 153 million gallons of jet fuel during the last fiscal year. The company aims to obtain 30 percent of its jet fuel from alternativ­e sources by 2030 and anticipate­s the first delivery of such fuel in 2019.

Other highlights of the Citizenshi­p Report:

» FedEx reported a 37 percent increase, to $9.2 billion, in spending with diverse, minority, women-owned and other small business suppliers, from a year earlier.

» FedEx invested more than $46 million in charitable contributi­ons in 97 communitie­s, and FedEx team members volunteere­d more than 93,000 hours in more than 500 cities.

» Customers who sought informatio­n about the company’s corporate citizenshi­p and carbon emissions data as part of their purchasing process accounted for $6.7 billion in revenue.

» FedEx operating units, including Express, Ground and Freight, avoided more than 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions through fuel and energy saving initiative­s.

» FedEx had more than 2,700 alternativ­e fuel vehicles in its fleet, a nearly 44 percent increase from a year earlier.

» The company brought three new solar installati­ons online, for a total of 18.
