Man in critical condition after being shot during assault in Frayser

The victim of an early morning assault in Frayser is in critical condition as Memphis police continue their investigation of the incident that occurred at 2:15 a.m. Sunday at Semple Avenue and Harvester Lane.

Police say the unidentified man drove himself to a home in the 800 block of Juliet Avenue, where he called police. He told officers he was leaving a residence at Semple Avenue and Harvester Lane when four unknown men approached him. He told police one of the assailants told him to “give up your keys.”

After the victim refused, he said the assailants beat him, but he managed to escape and ran to his vehicle while hearing a loud pop. The victim later realized he had been shot and also lost a tooth in the attack.

Officers transported the man to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police checked the area around Semple Avenue and Harvester Lane but found no evidence. No information on the suspects was immediately available.

Police keep watch downtown following incidents with gunshots

A strong police presence kept watch over the busy downtown riverfront on Easter Sunday, a week after gunshots left two people wounded and only hours after video on social media showed shots being fired from cars in the same area.

The Facebook video showed shots fired in a crowded parking lot near Wagner and Beale streets shortly after midnight. Police on Sunday reported no problems, however, except for what they termed a misdemeanor vandalism at 200 Wagner.

MPD spokesman Louis Brownlee said the victim reported she left her vehicle about 11:30 p.m. Saturday and when she returned about 3 a.m. Sunday, the rear window and a rear passenger window had been broken. Brownlee said officers indicated the damage appeared to have been caused by a bullet, but there was no indication whether the incident was connected to the shots shown being fired in the video. Brownlee said an investigation was continuing.

Brownlee added late Sunday evening that additional officers were assigned to the area and that all cameras in the downtown area were being monitored. He said there was also additional traffic details.

On April 9, an altercation between two groups near Beale Street Landing and Tom Lee Park left two people, including a woman bystander, wounded. Two teenage brothers were later charged.
