The Liberty Bowl college football game, in an attempt to improve its image and boost Memphis-area ticket sales, is planning a tie-in with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Liberty Bowl executive director A.F. ‘Bud’ Dudley would not confirm the plans Friday, but said he expects St. Jude to make an announcement Monday.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Bikinis and bug-eyed boys were the order of the day on Fort Lauderdale’s sunny beaches Tuesday — signaling the beginning of the city’s annual college kid invasion. “The beaches were practically deserted over the weekend,” said one resident. “But today you’d have a hard time finding a place to spread your towel.” Police Captain John Sherlock estimated 10,000 boys and girls had arrived. About 35,000 are expected for the peak Easter weekend.

M.A. Lightman, Memphis theater operator, in a field of 32 masters, rolled up 123 1/2 match points yesterday to win the first event in the seventh Cotton Belt Bridge Tournament at Hotel Chisca. A.M. Sobel of New York is directing the tournament.

WASHINGTON — Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, today forwarded a message to the Russian Soviet Congress at Moscow, expressing his sympathy to the Russian people in their struggle for freedom. He said he spoke for “the great organized movement of working people.”

A recent English invention is an important step in the science of modern warfare. It consists of a parachute with a camera attached. The whole thing is fired from a rocket and opens up by means of a fuse. The camera is suspended from the bottom of the parachute and is operated by a string held by a man on the ground. Enemy fortifications can be easily photographed in this way.
