19-year-old man killed in shooting at Raleigh convenience store

Memphis Police are investigating the shooting death of a 19-year-old man early Sunday at a Raleigh convenience store.

Officers were called to Top Notch Market at 12:40 a.m. when they found a male who had been killed by a gunshot, according to a statement from the Memphis Police Department.

“The suspect is reportedly known to the victim and fled the scene in a red sedan,” the police statement states.

The store is at the corner of Stage and East, a block east of Austin Peay.

Late Sunday morning, the man behind the cash register counter declined to identify himself but said he owned Top Notch Market. On the wall opposite the counter was a 42-inch security monitor that shows various areas of the store, inside and out, from different cameras.

The man said he had seen the video recording that had been given to police. He said a customer with a gun in his pants came into the store about 12:30 a.m., bought a few items, but stayed near the counter because he seemed wary of two other people who also had come into the store and were walking around.

Eventually, one of the other two people approached the concerned customer from behind, grabbed at his gun, a fight began and one of the three was shot as the conflict spilled outside, the man behind the store counter said.

A couple pairs of pale blue, disposable medical gloves were still in the parking lot late Sunday morning.

The store has not experienced such an incident in the 10 years that he has owned the store, the man said.
