25 years ago — 1993

Three major shopping malls here have announced jointly that they will ban smoking in most areas effective July 1, joining a growing trend toward smoke-free environmen­ts. All common areas of Hickory Ridge Mall, the Mall of Memphis and Oak Court Mall are affected, including food court areas, restrooms, service corridors and utility areas. Full-service restaurant­s, which are permitted by law to designate smoking and non-smoking areas, may continue to do so. Oak Court does not have any fullservic­e restaurant­s; the other two malls do.

50 years ago — 1968

The Airport Commission yesterday directed the Memphis Metropolit­an Airport architects, Roy P. Harrover and Associates, to prepare plans for a proposed in-terminal motel at the airport. The motel would be in the planned west wing addition to the terminal and would consist of 30 units. A separate 100-room hotel already has been proposed for location elsewhere on airport property. Major motel operating firms have indicated interest in the proposals, said E.W. ‘Ned’ Cook, chairman of the airport board, but plans are not advanced far enough to discuss any contracts.

75 years ago — 1943

Lt. George W. Grider has been given a letter of commendati­on for his services as officer on a submarine during a patrol which resulted in the sinking of enemy vessels. A graduate of Annapolis, Lieutenant Grider is the son of the late John M. Grider, Memphian who died above the clouds in World War I.

100 years ago — 1918

Inspired and overjoyed by the brilliant advance of the United States Marines against the Germans in Picardy this week, Lieutenant Fleer of the flying school at Millington took to the air yesterday and made 100 successive loops before descending.

125 years ago — 1893

Thousands of Memphians gathered around the Memphis Cycle Club yesterday to view a parade of the club’s members. The tall, old trees in Court Square furnished an ideal vantage point for many a young boy and cool shade for many a fashionabl­e lady. After the parade the crowd moved to Billings’ Park for the club’s annual races.
