LOCAL BRIEF

-

Impressive numbers were flowing following the Memphis Redbirds’ fivegame sweep of Iowa on Tuesday night.

The 7-5 victory allowed Pacific Coast League All-Star Dakota Hudson to raise his pitching record to 12-2.

Memphis outscored the Cubs in the series at Principal Park, 39-13.

And the Redbirds improved to 53-32 overall behind a 12-hit attack that featured home runs from Randy Arozarena, Luke Voit and Paul DeJong.

Iowa (29-54) surrendered an RBI single to Voit in the first, before erupting for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Memphis, though, calmly responded with three runs in the second to pull even.

Arozarena hit his fourth homer – a two-run shot to left – and Voit added another RBI single.

Hudson, who went six innings and struck out six, continued to benefit from the hot-hitting Voit in the fifth. This time, it was a solo shot to left and the Redbirds took a lead they’d never relinquish. That’s because DeJong would drive in the speedy Oscar Mercado with the first home run of his Memphis rehab assignment.

In the bottom of the ninth, Redbird reliever Andrew Morales walked the first batter he faced, but a strikeout of Jacob Hannemann and a double-play ball off the bat of Wynton Bernard afforded him the opportunity to notch his first save.

Memphis hosted Omaha at AutoZone Park on Wednesday night. The series continues Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
