Gunshot victim seeks help at gas station

- Daniel Connolly Memphis Commercial Appeal USA TODAY NETWORK - TENNESSEE

A gunshot victim, who was apparently driving to get medical attention, saw police at a gas station in the heart of Midtown, pulled in and asked for help, a police supervisor said.

Numerous police cars remained at the Circle K gas station at the corner of Madison and McLean around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The gas station is close to Memphis Catholic Middle and High School, though a police supervisor said the shooting apparently happened miles away, in the 3900 block of Macon.

A white sedan with Dallas Cowboys fan flags on its roof stood in front of the gas station, parked sideways across multiple spots as though the driver had no time to position it within the lines. An apparent bullet hole was visible low on the driver’s side door, which was still open.

Lt. Casey Minga said the victim was apparently driving to get help at the Regional Medical Center. Minga said officers happened to be at the gas station when the driver saw them and pulled in about 10:30 p.m. An officer quickly called for an ambulance.

The victim was a 37-year-old man, Minga said, adding he believed the victim had been shot in the leg.

He said paramedics took the man from the scene in noncritical condition, but the police were later told the victim was in critical condition.

One person was sitting in the back of a squad car at the gas station. Minga said this person was related to the investigation but hadn’t been charged.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the gunshot victim was alone in the car.
