Beware false prophets

The July 31 guest column, “Getting arrested with followers of Jesus,” supports nonviolent civil disobedience presumably in service of the author’s philosophical and religious views. I agree with nonviolent expression of opinion, though the cause might be different from the writer’s. But I hasten to remind that religion, even Christianity, has not always been benevolent, so there is a risk to the blanket approach of one philosophy for all. Unfortunately, there are too many prophets and messiahs, etc., in religion, and now we have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to revere and emulate. Use common sense in choosing a cause, recognize that there are False Prophets, and understand that politics is the Great Deceiver, not the Great Deliverer. As we were returning from a visit with our new granddaughter in Mississippi, we noticed how well Interstate 55 and other highways are maintained there. Then we reached Tennessee. What a disgrace! The grass and all sorts of weeds and other scrubs that have sprung up along I-55 and I-240, starting in Whitehaven and all the way through the Memphis city limits. What a sorry sight and welcome to people who pass through and visit Memphis.
