TDOT is no help

What a terrible sight for our visitors to Memphis to travel on Germantown Parkway, also known as Tennessee State Route 177. This road is a real eyesore. The grass is knee-high in the median strips, the beautiful crepe myrtles have not been trimmed all summer and they are beginning to be bushes rather than trees. The grass along the I-40 exit ramps is unsightly. I have tried calling the Tennessee Department of Transportation several times and all I get is “Leave a message and we will call you back,” but no one ever calls back. I have called our state legislator, but so far no action has been taken. Help.

Blame GOP for border woes

An Aug. 23 letter writer believed that “both parties” are to blame for the ongoing debacle on our southern border. Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com. The fact is that Stephen Miller, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Trump initiated the zerotolerance policy and separated children from their parents to scare others away from seeking asylum.

Crossing the border illegally is a misdemeanor — the same as getting a speeding ticket. Imagine yourself being stopped for going 36 in a 35 mph zone, taken to jail, having your children taken from you and sent across the country, then never seeing them again. Think it can’t happen in America? Republican Trump made sure that it did. The “other party” had nothing to do with it.
