Tigers won’t change attendance total yet

University of Memphis President M. David Rudd said on 92.9-FM on Thursday that there are no plans at the moment to adjust the attendance total from the Tigers' season opener Saturday at the Liberty Bowl.

Rudd did leave open the possibility that Saturday's attendance of 33,697 could be changed and said he is looking into solutions of how to fix attendance issues.

"It's hard to retroactively deal with that, but those things are important for us," Rudd said on the "Jason & John Show." "Attendance figures are critical, so we're looking at if it's possible to correct and how do we do it, but how do we do it reliably."

Both Rudd and fans took to social media to voice their disapproval with the attendance from the Tigers' 66-14 win over Mercer. Rudd said on Twitter on Sunday he believed the attendance was more than 40,000.

The Liberty Bowl has a capacity of 56,862, according to the Tigers media guide.

"I don't hesitate saying there was more," Rudd said Thursday. "When you look at the aerial shots, I think it was more."

Rudd said there were two issues he identified with Saturday's low number: tickets not being scanned properly and fans who entered at overcrowded gates without their tickets being scanned at all.

Memphis' next home game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, against Georgia State. The Tigers visit Navy (0-1) on Saturday (2:30 p.m., CBS SN).
