So So Def 25th anniversary tour has been canceled
The “So-So Def Cultural Curren$y Tour” has been canceled. The hip-hop concert package — featuring stars associated with the Atlanta-based So So Def label including Xscape, Anthony Hamilton, Da Brat and Jagged Edge — had been set for an Oct. 14 kick off in Washington, D.C., with Tennessee dates at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena (Oct. 25) and Memphis (Oct. 26) at FedExForum.
But earlier this week, So So Def record label founder Jermaine Dupri tweeted out a statement that quickly threw the whole fall tour into a state of disarray.
“To all my fans, I know what I’m bout to say is gonna create a very very big [flame emoji] but due to my schedule and creative changes I don’t feel comfortable starting this tour on the 14th,” tweeted Dupri. “I honestly believe I need another week to get this to where I want it to be.”
Despite his intention to better prepare the tour, nearly all of So So Def tour dates have since been canceled, including the Bridgestone Arena and FedExForum stops. Only an Oct. 21 date in Atlanta remains on the schedule.
Industry speculation suggests it wasn’t a lack of preparation, but rather a lack of ticket sales that pushed the tour — ostensibly designed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the label — to collapse.
Regardless of the reasons, by Wednesday Ticketmaster confirmed that the bulk of the dates have officially been scrapped.
According to the Ticketmaster, refunds for physical tickets will be given at point of purchase only. Phone and online orders will automatically be canceled and refunded.
