So that was real flop sweat we saw on Chevy Chase’s forehead during the seems-like-a-lifetime 29 late-night shows he hosted for Fox this season. Fox pulled the plug on Chase this weekend, nearly six weeks after his Sept. 7 debut. Chase proved a couple of things. One, good television is harder to do than it looks. And two, high television “Q” scores can mean nothing. “Q” scores measure a personality’s familiarity and likability, and Fox executives crowed this summer that Chase’s were higher than anyone’s in late-night TV, including David Letterman’s. But Chase’s comedy wasn’t funny. His interviewing skills were nearly nonexistent. The more he tried, the more embarrassing he became.

Capt. George Arnold has declined the urgings of his friends that he run for mayor. He believes being mayor of Memphis should be a full-time job, not held by a businessman like himself. He commented last night that the $4,500 salary that goes with the job is none too big if the duties are performed correctly.
