Small states need Electoral College
Democrats would love to eliminate the Electoral College method of choosing a president because they believe they could win more. The current system was devised such that every state has some voice in selecting the presidents. Should we eliminate the Electoral College, the highly populated states like California, New York, Illinois, Texas and Pennsylvania, which contain 41% of our population, would determine the election. Do residents of Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee and other small states want those larger states having all the power to determine our presidents? The Founding Fathers recognized these issues many years ago and created the Electoral College. Elimination of the Electoral College would create a government accountable to a few highly populated states, not a government of all the people.

Trump won 49 states
In response to the Oct.16 letter, “More voted for Clinton,” I would like to present these facts. People hear that Hillary Clinton got more popular votes than Donald Trump, and therefore, are suggesting the Electoral College be eliminated. That she got more popular votes is true: 65,845,625 to 62,985,106 – a margin of 2,860,591. Clinton received 8,753,788 votes to Trump’s 4,483,810 – a margin of 4,269,978 votes – in California alone. That means Trump received 1,409,459 more votes than Hillary Clinton in the other 49 states and territories. Do we really want to eliminate the Electoral College Email letters to letters@commercial appeal.com; mail Letters to the Editor, The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, Memphis, TN 38103; or click on the “Submit Letter” link on the Opinion page atcommercialappeal.com. and have large, heavily populated states like California decide all our presidential elections? I certainly don’t and I think our Founding Fathers didn’t either.
