PROVIDING COMFORT
“You’re going to be so strong,” Bonnie Greer whispers to 2-month-old Cailey Watson while rocking the baby at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. “You’re going to get to go home, yes you are.” Greer has held and comforted babies for 762 hours and counting. She’s just one of 59 active baby hugger volunteers at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. An American story that few get the opportunity to hear.

Baby hugger volunteers interact with infants and toddlers throughout the day, providing respite care for parents and caregivers who can’t always be present at the hospital.
“Baby huggers are vital to what we do here at Le Bonheur,” said Anne Elizabeth Hattier, NICU child life specialist. “Baby huggers are just so comforting for families to know that somebody else can be here when they can’t be.”
The baby hugger volunteers at Le Bonheur not only provide comfort to children in need by hugging on them, but they also talk, sing, read and play with them.
“There’s a lot of research that young children thrive and grow and develop when they are given care and that includes touching care not just medical care,” Greer said. Sunday
