Sell hoodies, then ban them?

I am very disturbed about the recent “hoodie policy” at the Wolfchase Galleria. I’ve been shopping at that mall since it opened. How can you ban wearing hoodies (even if they are worn down) while stores in the mall are selling them? Isn’t this a violation of some sort? This does not make sense and the retailers should speak up as well. I can see having a policy that says all hoodies should be worn down but to ban this most popular winter clothing is absurd.

Returning to Wolfchase

Actions inspire counteractions. A recent letter writer opposes shopping at Wolfchase Galleria, citing AfricanAmerican discrimination in the mall’s banning of hoodie wearing. I will resume shopping there -- not wearing a hoodie, of course. There will be some good bargains at the mall. Watch The Commercial Appeal advertisements. Or should The CA not publish the mall’s advertising now?

Hoodies don’t kill people

Within the set of hoodie-wearers is a small set of those who perpetrate crimes. Within the set of gun owners is a small set of those who perpetrate crimes. The many are penalized for the actions of a few.

Focus on policy, not provocation

The article written about the “No Hoodie” policy is misleading and inflammatory. I understand the mall’s problem; a few robberies occurred inside the mall by hoodie- wearing thugs. The policy may be selectively enforced and ill-conceived. That is the concern. But instead of addressing the issue, disingenuous inflammatory remarks are linked.

The picture accompanying the article says the young men were arrested for wearing hoodies. That is just wrong. They were escorted out because they would not remove the hoodies. Regardless if the policy is right or wrong, they returned after being asked to leave and that is why they were arrested.

Then the Trayvon Martin tragedy is invoked...It doesn’t help with the issue. This only divides people in the city and just threatens to bring those slow burning coals of race into a hot flame. The hoodie policy and its possibly selective enforcement is the issue. The policy is a not a good idea but that should be the focus...
