Georgian Hills students to return to class Monday
Georgian Hills Achievement Elementary students will be back in class Monday after three weeks of no school.
The school received a new boiler and had it installed on Thursday to fix its ongoing heating system problem. Lunch will be available at the school on Friday for parents and students at 11:30 a.m. and classes will resume Monday, Achievement School District spokesman Bobby White said.
Students at the elementary school have been home since Nov. 12 because of heating issues that began during an earlier-than-usual cold snap. A new boiler had to be ordered from Pennsylvania.
White said previously the district believed the heating problem would be fixed over the Thanksgiving holiday, but a new issue prevented that from happening. The ASD reached out to Shelby County Schools and a back-up plan included co-locating elementary students at Georgian Hills Middle, an SCS school. But with the new boiler installed by Thursday, White said, it didn’t make sense to move students to a new building for just one day.
SCS owns the elementary school building and is responsible for major capital needs.
About 10 schools across the county suffered significant heating problems during the cold spell, as early November temperatures dipped below 30 degrees.
