Memorial service for chef Gary Williams on Saturday
Funeral arrangements for chef Gary Williams, 56, have been set.
There will be a memorial service in Memphis on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Greater Community Temple COGIC, 5151 Winchester.
Afterward, Mr. Williams will be taken back to his hometown of New Orleans to be laid to rest.
A second service will be held in New Orleans on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church.
On Wednesday night, the chef and owner of the Krewe of DeJavu unexpectedly died due to a heart attack.
The outpouring of remembrances of this beloved chef flooded social media. Friends, customers and fellow members of the Memphis restaurant community have all chimed in about the good deeds and loving heart of this chef that many described as someone who “lit up a room when he entered” and who “never knew a stranger.”
The restaurant, 936 Florida St., remains open, with his son Rondell Williams continuing to serve his father’s Cajun and Creole fare.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family cover the expenses of returning Mr. Williams to New Orleans to be laid to rest. Donations can also be made at the restaurant. ❚ USPS Priority Express Mail: Dec. 22;

USPS Christmas shipping tips
and sometimes cause packages to be undeliverable if the address information is lost.
2) Don’t guess the zip or the address
It’s better to leave the ZIP code off than to get it wrong and guessing an address is an easy way to insure your delivery is delayed.
3) Throw a delivery and return address inside the box.
Having that information safely stored with any shipments makes it easier for the Postal Service to repackage a shipment and get it back on its way in case it’s damaged in transport, she said.
4) Take glass out of picture frames
Taking the glass out and wrapping it separately in bubble wrap makes it far less likely to break during transport, and can keep a gift’s intended recipients from opening up a box full of broken glass.
5) Use bubble mailer instead of an envelope
Avoid sending gift cards in a standard letter or a greeting-card envelope, as the twists and turns of USPS’s mail processing machinery can often cause gift cards to tear open standard paper envelopes and get lost in the mail.
