Lemoyne-owen’s bold new future

- Your Turn

A strong Lemoyne-owen College is mission-critical for Memphis.

Our community has invested so much in K-12 education, and we’re seeing more and more first generation college students.

These students arrive in our colleges and universities full of hope about what their college career will mean for their prosperous and fulfilling future. It is imperative that we give them what they need to graduate college ready to advance to meaningful careers. In particular, we owe students: ❚ Curriculum matched with our community’s economic needs.

❚ Wrap-around support that meets students where they are.

❚ Opportunities for valuable job experience.

That’s why I am encouraged by Dr. Andrea Miller’s leadership.

The planned new Center for Cyber Security will provides curriculum in computer science and/or criminal justice with a concentration in cyber defense.

The “Last Mile” grants Lemoyne began in 2018 to support students who are on track to graduate but have financial problems that get in the way of earning their degrees.

The ALSAC/ST. Jude Engagement Call Center on campus empowers student interns to make calls to St. Jude donors, thanking them for their financial support as part of ALSAC’S ongoing donor engagement program.

Lemoyne-owen has set aggressive goals in Destination 2023, focusing student success and excellence in innovation, growth, and economic impact. Donations like the $250,000 the college received in 2018 from the Shelby County Commission are crucial, if the college is going to survive and thrive.

With strong staff direction from Vice President of Institutional Advancement Anthony Neal, trustees on the Fundraising Committee are ready to help ensure the college has the resources she needs to deliver excellence for our students.

It’s a privilege to serve alongside a board of caring, brilliant leaders who agree that we must improve college outcomes. Trustees, faculty, staff, donors and students are counting on us.

Now is the time to come together in service of the college’s mission to provide a transformative experience educating students for urban-focused leadership, scholarship, service and professional careers.
