Heat outlast Grizzlies late
MIAMI — A barrage of 3-pointers and a big night from the bench propelled Miami to a 112-108 win over Memphis at the American Airlines Center on Saturday.
Poor late-game offense plagued the Grizzlies (19-23) after they erased a 12-point secondhalf deficit.
Marc Gasol air-balled a potential go-ahead 3pointer with 31.7 seconds left as the shot clock expired.
Trailing by one point, the Grizzlies forced a Dwyane Wade miss on the other end. But Miami’s Josh Richardson grabbed the offensive rebound, took a foul and made a free throw to make it 110-108.
Coming out of a timeout with nine seconds left, Shelvin Mack took an inbounds pass from the sideline and drove baseline for the Grizzlies. Wade defended Mack and earned a jump-ball as Mack elevated for a potential game-tying layup with four seconds left.
The Heat won the jump ball, and Richardson iced the outcome with a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining.
Miami (21-20) hit 15 of 31 3-pointers compared to 9-of-29 for the Grizzlies.
Big names: Jamychal Green’s second straight double-double paced the Grizzlies.
Green finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds in 22 minutes. Mike Conley added 22 points for Memphis.
Justice Winslow reached double figures for a 10th straight game, and he did not stop there. The fourth-year pro caught fire with 10-of-16 shooting, finishing with 26 points for the Heat.
Notable: Kyle Anderson left the game in the second quarter after landing awkwardly on his left ankle. The Grizzlies’ starting small forward did not return.
Mack reached double figures in scoring in consecutive games for the first time since early November.
In his second game back as the backup point guard after ceding the role to Jevon Carter for two games, Mack scored 13 points on 13 shots from the floor.
In what will likely be the final meeting between the Grizzlies and Wade, the Heat’s legendary shooting guard scored 10 points.
