10 tasty ways to use your kitchen scraps
Here are ways to transform 10 items normally headed for the trash into delicious and nutritious dishes and snacks.
Broccoli stems: Peel and shred to make broccoli slaw or use in a stir fry, or make cream of broccoli soup.
Chicken bones: Use the leftover bones from a roast chicken to make a homemade chicken stock.
Over-ripe bananas: Over-ripe bananas can be used to make banana bread. They can also be peeled and frozen to use in smoothies.
Over-ripe berries: Over-ripe berries can be used to make jams and jellies, or can be frozen to add to smoothies.
Orange peels: Orange peels can be candied to make a sweet snack.
Cauliflower stems: Cauliflower stems can be cooked and then pureed to make cauliflower “mashed potatoes.”
Watermelon rinds: Can be pickled for a Southern snack.
Leftover veggies: Leftover veggies (fresh or cooked) can be chopped to use in soups or added to a frittata.
Potato peels: Potato peels can be roasted to a healthy french fry-inspired snack.
Leftover bread: Stale bread is the best kind of bread for bread pudding. Leftover bread can also be used to make croutons. Bread scraps can be frozen until ready to use.
