Alignment of resources
Ray pledged that the school district will be a great steward of public dollars and would make sure money flows back to the classroom. If there is a cut, the district will try to protect the classroom first, he said.
Finalizing the footprint proposal
With more than $500 million in deferred maintenance across the school system, the district must lead with academics first to complete the footprint proposal that could close some schools. No decisions have been made, but there are plans to listen to communities, teachers and students. In December, former superintendent Dorsey Hopson presented a plan to shrink the district’s footprint, which included closing a dozen schools and building new ones to replace dilapidated buildings.
District office transition
Over the next two or three years, the central office will move from its longtime headquarters on Hollywood Street to the recently purchased Bayer Consumer Health campus on Jackson Avenue. SCS paid $6.6 million for the building, which is near its Central Nutrition Center.
Culture building
Ray also included “culture building” in his list, but did not elaborate on how that goal would be reached.
