TBI identifies a man killed in northeast Memphis officer-involved shooting

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigat­ion released the identity of a man killed Thursday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in northeast Memphis.

Jason Matthew Hill, 40, was shot and killed by Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies while they attempted to to execute an arrest warrant, according to sheriff ’s department spokespers­on Lt. Anthony Buckner.

Buckner said deputies arrived at the hotel around 3:35 p.m. After the person was identified, Buckner said there was an exchange of gunfire, and the person was fatally wounded.

The shooting took place at the Garden Tree Hotel.

The officers who shot and killed Hill have not yet been identified and have been placed on administra­tive leave, a standard procedure after any officer-involved killing.

Hill is the second person killed by law enforcemen­t in Shelby County in 2019.

Abdoulaye Thiam, 20, was shot and killed by Memphis police just after 8 p.m. during a confrontat­ion with three officers on Jan. 2.

A preliminar­y report from TBI said that the deputies involved were with the narcotics division of the sheriff’s department.

When Hill saw the deputies approachin­g, he began to fire, according to TBI.

TBI agents were requested to the scene of the shooting by Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.
