Joel Tullison will spend 20 years in prison for second-degree murder in a plea deal for the 2014 killing of David Allen Hoss, the man who was involved with Tullison’s estranged wife.

The settlement and the guilty plea that sends Tullison to prison without parole was approved by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee on Monday, the day Tullison’s trial for first-degree murder was scheduled to start.

On Oct. 20, 2014, Tullison was at a store on Riverdale Road at Stateline Road when he saw an SUV that belonged to Hoss. The two men had words and when Hoss, 28, drove away, Tullison, now 49, followed him.

The vehicles were traveling north on Riverdale, approaching Fox Hedge Road, when Tullison pulled alongside Hoss and fired a handgun at least nine times, causing Hoss to swerve into the path of an oncoming asphalt truck.

Hoss, from Olive Branch, died from a gunshot wound to the head.

According the police affidavit, Tullison fled the scene, drove home and called his brother-in-law to tell him he’d shot his wife’s boyfriend. The brotherin-law urged Tullison to turn himself in to police.

In the police affidavit, Tullison told investigators he wasn’t concerned about the affair but did not want Hoss around his young daughter.

Tullison also said that Hoss sped up and slowed down in his SUV, that he thought Hoss was taunting him and that Hoss got on his cellphone and gave him a “look.”

Tullison was a nurse and is a U.S. Army veteran.
