Spring Fling from A to Z

What you’ll need to know going into the week Statewide stories to watch for at Murfreesbo­ro

Welcome to Spring Fling, the Olympic-style festival that features all five Tssaa-sanctioned spring sport state tournament­s held during the same week. All but Division II-AA baseball are held in Rutherford County with that tournament held in neighborin­g Wilson County until the championsh­ip round.

The USA Today network put together an A-to-z list of who and what to know during this week's state tournament­s.

A – Admission. Tickets cost $10 to attend each day. Hand stamps received when purchasing tickets gives

Murfreesbo­ro will be the site for Spring Fling 2019 beginning Tuesday as state tournament­s for baseball, softball, boys soccer, track and field and tennis will be held.

Here are some statewide story lines to watch during the week:

Gibbs’ Carol Mitchell seeks another milestone

Longtime Gibbs softball coach Carol Mitchell added another accomplish­ment to her career in April, winning her 900th career game as the La

access to all TSSAA sites for that day. Also plan on paying $5 to park daily.

B – Brentwood Academy. Brentwood Academy has won four straight boys track and field team championsh­ips.

The Eagles will try to add to their state record of most overall team championsh­ips with a 25th this week.

C – Cam Carroll. The Rossview senior forward was District 13-AAA’S offensive MVP with 28 goals as he tries to get the Hawks to their first state semifinal.

D – Davis. Trinity Christian junior Kevin Davis is the top seed in the Small Class boys track and field championsh­ips in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. He won the 100 in 2018.

E – Emmanuel. Whitehaven senior Emmanuel Bynum, a Tennessee track signee, is the top seed in the 400 for the Large Class division in Thursday's state track and field meet.

F – Facilities. It takes eight high school baseball facilities to hold the baseball state tournament­s.

The Class A tournament is at MTCS and Riverdale; the AA tournament is at Blackman and Smyrna; the AAA is at Oakland and Siegel. The DII-A tournament is at La Vergne, and DII-AA is at Wilson Central.

G – Georgia. Brentwood senior Georgia Fischer, a Wofford signee, is trying to win her third doubles tennis championsh­ip. Fischer and Alex Torre play at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Large Class quarterfin­als.

H – Hydration. The weather forecast calls for temperatur­es in the high 80s and low 90s this week. Hydration for athletes and fans will be important.

I – Irwin. CPA'S Nathan Irwin won last year's Division II-A singles state title and will try to defend it this year.

J – Jake. Knoxville Catholic senior Jake Renfree, the Gatorade National Cross Country Runner of the Year, has the best sectional time in the 800, running it in 1:53.75. He'll also be one of the favorites in the 1,600.

K – Kinder. Brentwood's Jett Kinder won the Large Class decathlon for the second straight year, finishing with 7,077 total points. He has the secondbest distances from the sectionals in the high jump and triple jump.

L – Leebrick. Lipscomb softball signee Presley Leebrick enters the state tournament hitting .615 with 80 runs scored in 45 games for Siegel.

M – Murfreesbo­ro. Murfreesbo­ro has been site of Spring Fling since the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce won the bid in 2006 and has it under contract through 2020. The event began in 1994 in Chattanoog­a.

N – Noland. Vanderbilt signee Parker Noland helped lead Farragut to the Class AAA baseball state tournament, hitting .490 with seven home runs and 43 RBIS. He is also a finalist for the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Associatio­n's Mr. Baseball award for his class; the winner will be announced Tuesday.

O – Odom. CPA senior Travis Odom, an Auburn signee and DII-A Mr. Baseball finalist, has the Lions in the state semifinals.

P – Purple Wave. Christian Brothers hasn't won a Division II-AA soccer title since 2016, but the Purple Wave enter this year's tournament as one of the favorites with a 14-0-4 record.

R – Roland. Arlington's Roland Turner had the best discus throw in the Large Class track sectionals, throwing 170 feet, 10 inches. It was the best mark by more than 6 feet.

S – St. Benedict. St. Benedict's softball team has qualified for its 24th consecutiv­e state tournament but never has won a state title.

T – Three-peat. Station Camp is seeking a third consecutiv­e Class AAA boys soccer state title this week. The Bison face Karns at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfin­als.

U – Unbeaten. Three unbeaten teams are competing in the boys soccer state tournament­s this week.

Brentwood is 17-0-1 and competing in the Large Class tournament.

Evangelica­l Christian School is 190-3 and in DII-A. And Christian Brothers is 14-0-4 and in DII-AA.

V – Vols. Three Tennessee softball signees will be playing for state titles this week – Jackson South Side's Josie Willingham, King's Academy's Madison Webber and Siegel's Caitlyn Mccrary.

W – Winn. Dresden's Loral Winn, an Ole Miss signee, is the top seed in the Small Class for the 800-meter run, 1,600 and 3,200.

X – Xavier. Ensworth senior Garrett Schultz, a Xavier baseball signee, is a DII-AA Mr. Baseball finalist and helped lead the Tigers to their first trip to the state tournament.

Y – Young. South-doyle junior Elijah Young is the No. 13 football recruit in Tennessee, according to 247Sports Composite.

He will run the 100-meter dash in the Large School state championsh­ips on Thursday. Young's college football offers include Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Louisville and South Carolina.

Z – Zou. Central Magnet tennis player Andrew Zou reached the boys singles tennis tournament for the third time in four years. He was a Large Class state semifinali­st in 2018.
