Memphis basketball recruit Watford commits to LSU
Memphis recruit Trendon Watford is headed to the SEC.
The five-star forward from Birmingham, Ala., committed to LSU on Monday, a decision expected by many because the Tigers do not have any open scholarships remaining for next season.
Watford, ranked No. 26 overall in 247Sports' composite rankings, was once one of Memphis' top priorities in the class because of his strong relationship with assistant coach Mike Miller.
The 6-foot-9 forward also played for Memphis-based AAU team Hoop City Basketball Club, which is coached by Miller's cousin, Ernie Kuyper.
Watford committed to LSU over Memphis, Alabama and Indiana.
The agile big man took an official visit to Memphis on Oct. 4 for Memphis Madness and returned to the city in April to play in the Jack Jones Shootout with Tigers signee D.J. Jeffries.
Watford originally was scheduled to announce his college decision April 20, but pushed that date back.
LSU'S coach, Will Wade, was reinstated on April 16, just four days before Watford's original decision date. Wade was suspended in March after his name came up in reports of FBI wiretaps related to college basketball's corruption scandal.
