New bulk trash pickup in effect
A new plan for bulk trash pickup went into effect this month in Memphis, the city’s top waste management official said.
Regular recycling and trash pickup will still take place on the customer’s regular weekly schedule, Albert Lamar, director of the city’s solid waste division, told City Council members May 7.
The new bulk trash pickup plan applies only to big “outside-the-cart” items such as tree debris, small logs or
anything above two bags of trash outside of the cart, Lamar said.
The bulk trash pickup will happen once every two weeks, on the customer’s regular collection day.
Depending on where the customer lives, the bulk trash pickup will take place either on the first and third week of the month or the second and fourth week of the month, Lamar said.
Mailers have gone out to inform customers about their pickup dates. Anyone who needs more information about the timing of their pickup can call the city government by dialing 311.
Customers may also look up their address on the city’s website, memphistn.gov/government/solid_waste_ management.
Customers can also download the cellphone app “Memphis Curbside Collection,” available at the Apple app store and Google Play.
Solid waste officials have said the plan aims to give customers more regularity in bulk trash pickup.
The city invested millions of dollars in new equipment, hired additional employees and added a new contractor to make the new service available, city officials have said.
