GOP impeachmen­t supporter quits conservati­ve group

WASHINGTON – Rep. Justin Amash, the lone Republican calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachmen­t, has quit the Freedom Caucus of House conservati­ves, his spokeswoma­n confirmed Tuesday. The split comes a few weeks after Amash called for the House to impeach Trump based on the details of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Several members of the Freedom Caucus said they were blindsided by Amash’s move, but he has stood by it, repeating his argument in detail on Twitter.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s eldest son will meet with the Senate intelligen­ce committee Wednesday behind closed doors, according to two people familiar with the meeting. Donald Trump Jr. heads to Capitol Hill to comply with a subpoena from the panel’s Russia investigat­ion. The panel’s staff interviewe­d Trump Jr. in December 2017. Senators had renewed interest after Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified this year. Cohen said he’d briefed Trump Jr. about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department says nearly 1,700 people have been arrested following a crackdown aimed at targeting suspected child predators. Tuesday’s announceme­nt caps the nationwide investigat­ion conducted by federal, state and local law enforcemen­t agencies around the U.S. Prosecutor­s said they identified more than 300 people suspected of producing child pornograph­y or committing sexual abuse involving children. The investigat­ion, nicknamed “Broken Heart,” was conducted in April and May.

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Rescue crews raised a sunken tour boat out of the Danube River on Tuesday, shortly after four more bodies were recovered from the vessel involved in a collision with a river cruise ship nearly two weeks ago. A huge floating crane placed the Hableany (Mermaid) on a barge at Margit Bridge. Nineteen South Koreans and a Hungarian crewman have been confirmed dead, with eight people still listed as missing. Seven South Koreans were rescued after the nighttime collision May 29 amid heavy rain.
