50 years ago — 1969
Peter E. Gillquist, former regional director of Campus Crusade for Christ International, has been named director of development for Memphis State University. One of Mr. Gillquist’s major responsibilities will be to organize and direct fundraising among businesses and individuals. He will serve as executive vice president of the Memphis State University Foundation. Mr. Gillquist succeeds Frank C. Holloman, city director of fire and police, who left the post in 1966. Richard C. Strub, assistant director of development, served as acting director.
75 years ago — 1944
London – Two congressmen returning from France suggested Sunday that General Dwight D. Eisenhower be given “the toughest diplomatic post in the world” after the war to make use of his “proven qualities — ability to get along with all types of people, a shrewd appraisal of every situation and common sense.”
100 years ago — 1919
A site for the Memphis Packing Corp. plant will be at the foot of Trigg Avenue, and it will cost about $1,000,000, announced members of the board who last night decided on the location.
125 years ago — 1894
Nashville – Secretary John P. Hickman, of the State Association of Confederate Soldiers, yesterday chartered the John C. Carter Bivouac No. 23, Confederate Soldiers, at Arlington, Shelby County, Tenn. Charter members include J.P. Bone, J.W. Allen, J.V. Bryan, R.S. Donelson, R.G. Gillespie, F.M. Hughes, N.G. Jones, W.D. Stewart and J.S. Wyatt.
