Week 9 brought a pair of doubleover­time games in Munford’s 30-27 win over Kirby and MUS’ 36-33 road win over Pope John Paul II. Here are five takeaways from the action.

6-foot-3, 320-pound Deris Jackson can move

Lausanne’s Deris Jackson, a threestar lineman, displayed his power and quickness with a touchdown catch in the Lynx’ 51-0 win over Westwood. The 6-foot-3, 320-pound senior caught a screen pass and ran over Longhorn defenders on the way to the endzone, but it was called back because of a penalty. Jackson has offers from Memphis, Arkansas State and Chattanoog­a, among others.

Briarcrest, Houston stay undefeated

Briarcrest’s Michael Dallas was 22-35 passing with a pair of touchdowns in the Saints’ 35-6 win over Cordova. Houston beat KIPP 44-6. Each team features one of the best running back’s in the area in Briarcrest’s Jabari Small, and Houston’s Lincoln Pare.

Covington loses again

Defending Class 3A runner-up Covington is on a two-game losing streak after falling 20-13 to South Gibson, marking the first time the Chargers have lost back-to-back games since 2016. Marcus Hayes rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Olive Branch, Oxford will meet

Next week brings a battle for first place in MHSAA’S Region 1-6A when Olive Branch hosts Oxford. The Conquistad­ors beat Southaven 38-14 Friday night while Oxford beat defending state champ Horn Lake 14-10. Olive Branch has won its last five games. Oxford has won its last six.

Millington tops Fayette-ware

Millington moved into first place in Region 8-4A with a 27-12 win over Fayette-ware. Tommy Clifton had 22 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 88 yards and a passing touchdown. The Trojans play at Ripley next week before closing the regular season with Bolton on Nov. 1.
