Here’s who won in Desoto County

Winners in elections across Mississipp­i

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s local and statewide races are in, and Desoto County voters overwhelmi­ngly favored incumbents and Republican candidates, with one exception.

Here’s a look at how Desoto County residents cast their ballots.

Statewide races

Governor: Desoto County voted overwhelmi­ngly for Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves. Statewide, Reeves received 52% of the vote, beating Democrat Jim Hood, the state attorney general, by a comfortabl­e margin. In Desoto County, Reeves received 61% of the vote to Hood’s 38%.

Lieutenant Governor: Desoto County voters also overwhelmi­ngly voted for Republican Delbert Hosemann for the state’s second-in-command. Statewide, Hosemann received 60% of the vote to Democrat Jay Hughes’ 40%. In Desoto County, Hosemann earned 67% of the vote.

Attorney General: Republican Lynn Fitch beat Democrat Jennifer Riley Collins by a wide margin both statewide, earning 58% of the vote, and in Desoto County, earning 66% of the vote.

Agricultur­e Commission­er: Incumbent Republican Andy Gipson carried the vote both statewide and in the county defeating challenger Rickey L Cole. Mississipp­i voters elected Gibson with 59% of the vote. He earned 68% of the vote in Desoto County.

Insurance Commission­er: Republican Mike Chaney was re-elected with 62% of the vote statewide, defeating Robert E. Amos. He also won Desoto County with 69% of the vote.

Treasurer: Republican David Mcrae won a decisive victory earning 61% of the vote statewide and 69% of the vote in Desoto County, easily defeating Addie Lee Green.

Secretary of State: Republican Michael Watson carried the vote state and county-wide, earning 59% of the vote statewide and 67% in Desoto County, defeating Johnny Dupree.

Local races

Transporta­tion Commission­er Northern District: Former Desoto County supervisor Republican John Caldwell defeated Democrat Joe T. “Joey” Grist, a former member of the state House of Representa­tives, with 63% of the vote district-wide. In Desoto County, Caldwell earned 69% of the vote.

State Senate District 2: Incumbent Republican Sen. David Parker retained his senate seat, fending of a challenge from Democrat Lee A. Jackson and getting 60% of the vote.

State Senate District 19: Incumbent Republican Sen. Kevin Blackwell also held off a challenge from Democrat Dianne Black. Blackwell earned 64% of the vote.

State House of Representa­tives District 7: Incumbent Republican Rep. Steve Hopkins retained his seat, beating Democrat Theresa Gillespie Isom with 66% of the vote.

State House of Representa­tives District 28: Republican Jerry Darnell handily defeated Democrat Matt Williams with 85% of the vote.

State House of Representa­tives District 40: Democrat Hester Jackson Mccray looks to have narrowly unseated incumbent Republican Rep. Ashley Henley by 13 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Desoto County Coroner: Incumbent Republican William Joshua Pounders easily held off a challenge from Independen­t Lora Oxner Eytchison, receiving 77% of the vote.

Desoto County Supervisor District 2: Incumbent Republican Mark Gardner held off a challenge from Democrat James E. Woodard to retain his seat with 67% of the vote.

Desoto County Supervisor District 3: Republican Ray Denison defeated Democrat Bacardi M. Harris with 60% of the vote.

Justice Court Judge District 2: Incumbent Republican Larry Vaughn held off challenger Willie Obadiah Lyons with Vaughn earning 67% of the vote.
