25 years ago — 1994

Lichterman Nature Center officials have reported the theft of two red foxes. Shirley Vollbach, assistant wildlife specialist, discovered the foxes were missing when she arrived at work Tuesday morning and went to feed the animals. The center is closed on Mondays. Armed with wire cutters, the thieves apparently cut a hole in the fence and slipped through the opening. “I can’t imagine them having that kind of guts,” said Vollbach, who has been bitten by one of the foxes. “They may not know it, but these animals could tear them up. The male is especially unfriendly.”

50 years ago — 1969

A group of white and black civic leaders expressed encouragem­ent yesterday that a mediation panel can be named soon in the dispute between the NAACP and the Memphis Board of Education. After a meeting with Board of Education members yesterday at the school board, the group issued this statement: “An ad hoc committee of black and white civic leaders met again Saturday with members of the Board of Education to discuss the school crisis. Representa­tives of the committee have met with representa­tives of the NAACP. Discussion­s have centered on procedures for selecting representa­tives of both bodies to a panel with the hope that meaningful discussion­s will be resumed soon.”

75 years ago — 1944

Battery A of the 114th Field Artillery, an all Memphis World War I volunteer group, will hold its 26th Armistice celebratio­n at the Claridge tomorrow night. Addresses will be given by Mayor Chandler, Col. Roane Waring, Judge Bacon and Abe Waldauer, battery president.

100 years ago — 1919

Seven members of a hunting club from Harrisburg, Ill., on route down the Mississipp­i River to Lake Providence, La., to fish and hunt, lost their lives Friday night when their gasoline-propelled boat, the Dubalong, ran into an over-leaning treetop near Island 40 and turned over. Reports today are that none of the bodies have been recovered.

125 years ago — 1894

The elevens of the Memphis Athletic Club and Memphis University will play a game of football at Citizen’s Park this afternoon. For the M.A.C. will be: Gilham, Crump, Bowie, Rodet, Black, Pinkas, Stewart, Martin, Trezevant, Hovale and Smith. For the University: Taylor, Estes, Mallory, Brinkley, Mundinger, Peckham, Wright, Wilkerson, Taylor, Partee and Boggiano.
