25 years ago — 1995

Tuesday’s Oscar nomination­s announceme­nt coincided with Valentine’s Day and brought “Forrest Gump” 13 bon bons. The movie earned nomination­s for Best Picture, Best Actor for star Tom Hanks, Best Director for Robert Zemeckis and Best Supporting Actor for Gary Sinise — after gathering dust for more than five years at Warner Bros. and spinning in movie purgatory for 3½ years at Paramount. Also nominated for Best Picture were “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Quiz Show” and “The Shawshank Redemption.”

50 years ago — 1970

Jerry Lee Lewis brought Country Caravan No. 14 to the Mid-south Coliseum last night and mixed up some of his latest modern country numbers with older rock tunes to the delight of 4,591 fans. Lewis closed out the show with such numbers as “One Minute Past Eternity” and “Roll Over Beethoven,” two of his latest records, and “Great Balls of Fire,” one of his top rock records. Others on the program included Lynn Anderson, Carl Smith, Bobby Wright, Bill and Kathy Wilbourn and Charlie Rich. 75 years ago — 1945

Automobile­s of workers in local defense plants and military establishm­ents are being checked by Office of Police Administra­tion tire inspectors to determine if motorists are giving proper care to their tires. All four tires and the spare are inspected for condition and air pressure, and wheel alignment is checked. The program was instituted in the face of slim tire quotas for passenger cars.

100 years ago — 1920

Gen. John J. “Blackjack” Pershing will find Memphis awaiting him today with a real welcome. Plans for an elaborate parade and a showy reception could not be made because it is Sunday, but before the day is over the general will know, from the dining and wining and the speeches, that Memphis was delighted to have him.

125 years ago — 1895

Nashville – Governor Turney yesterday signed a bill creating the Second Chancery Court in Shelby County, and at the same time he appointed Sterling Pierson to the office.
