25 years ago — 1995

St. Louis – The University of Memphis closed out the Great Midwest Conference in style on Sunday with a twogame sweep of the Cincinnati Bearcats to claim its second GMC Tournament title in the past three seasons. The Tigers won the first game, 8-0, and then wrapped up the championsh­ip with a 5-3 victory. The tournament is the last one for the GMC, which is disbanding. Every GMC school except Dayton will be a member of the newly formed Conference USA. The GMC tournament winner does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament.

50 years ago — 1970

Wassell Randolph, president of the board of directors of the Memphis Public Library, a member of the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees since 1927, the former owner of Meadowbroo­k Dairy and a Memphis attorney, has died. He was 89. Mr. Randolph was elected to the Cossitt Library Board first in January 1917, succeeding his late father, William M. Randolph. Since 1935 he has served as president of the city's library board. The $5 million Wassell Randolph Student Alumni Center at 800 Madison in the University of Tennessee Medical Units was dedicated

Attorney General Will Gerber, who says he has more respect for a highway robber than for a

profession­al gambler, has called on Sheriff Roger W. West of St. Francis County, Ark., to look into reported gambling activities at Black Fish Lake.

100 years ago — 1920

Washington – Erected in memory of all patriots who died for the nation's preservati­on, the Arlington National Cemetery received its formal dedication Saturday. President Wilson, in a speech read for him by Secretary of War Baker, spoke of “the millions of Americans called upon to vindicate upon foreign fields of battle the principles of political liberty.”

125 years ago — 1895

One of a gang of county convicts at work near Harbert and Mclean out in East Memphis, broke loose yesterday. Officers emptied their pistols at his departing form, but to no avail.
