Morant surprises dad with new car

- Evan Barnes

The day he was drafted by the Grizzlies, Ja Morant got emotional thinking about how much his father, Tee, sacrificed for him.

Nearly 13 months later, Morant paid his father back. The rookie guard surprised his father Wednesday with a new white car complete with a red ribbon on the hood

The moment was captured in a three-part video on Morant’s Instagram feed. He and his family had their phones ready as Tee Morant walked outside his garage before laughing and bending over in shock at the white car with a red ribbon. The make and model are not identifiable in the video.

“(F)or you OG @teemorant,” Morant’s caption read in the first video. The second caption said “appreciate you my guy” with a praying hands emoji.

Morant added humor in the third video by saying “go cut up in traffic” with a laughing emoji.

Tee Morant, who turned down an offer to play basketball overseas to raise his family, has been his son’s biggest supporter. The two break down film after every game, and the elder Morant isn’t shy about celebrating his son’s highlights like when he nearly went on the court after Ja Morant’s game-winner in Charlotte.

Former NBA player turned ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins tweeted his approval to Morant after watching the video.

“That’s what its all about Young fella...taking care of the people that took care of you. Love it,” Perkins said.

The car was the latest gesture from Morant, who was scheduled to leave for Orlando with the rest of the Grizzlies on Wednesday. On Tuesday night, he spoke with several top high school basketball players from Hoop City Basketball Club
