25 years ago — 1995

Lemoyne-owen College has agreed to abandon appeals of an unfavorabl­e audit and will return $277,902 to the Department of Education for loans and grants paid to students in unapproved programs in Mississipp­i. The college has five years in which to repay the money, federal officials said Friday. Lemoyne-owen’s liability dates to 1992 and 1993, when the school offered college courses at off-campus sites in Tunica and Greenville, Miss.

50 years ago — 1970

Singer Marguerite Piazza, who recently battled successful­ly against cancer, will become chairman of the 1971 National Cancer Crusade. “She knows the enemy and its warning signals,” William B. Lewis, chairman of the society’s national board, told The Commercial Appeal yesterday. “We think she will be a most effective campaign manager,” said Mr. Lewis. “She will be leading 2 million volunteers throughout this country for fundraisin­g and education about cancer.”

75 years ago — 1945

Climaxing two hours of colorful festivitie­s and keen competitio­n at Overton Park, the 17th annual Wading Pool Revue yesterday afternoon crowned a new king and queen of Memphis children — “Miss and Master Memphis of 1945.” Chosen from 300 contestant­s representi­ng the various Memphis playground­s were Ranell Smith of Hollywood and Glen Raymond Sanderson of Vollentine.

100 years ago — 1920

Half of the 16 fire companies of Memphis are now manned by regulars while the others are manned by volunteers during the walkout. The volunteers are working on three shifts in 24 hours. In addition to the eats being brought to them by their families, they are being fed from the Hotel Gayoso.

125 years ago — 1895

The ladies of Shelby County have been left in a most embarrassi­ng position by the County Court. The court had promised them an appropriat­ion of $600 to make an exhibit at the Atlanta Exposition. They have spent weeks preparing the exhibit and were ready to let contracts for some work when the County Court rescinded the appropriat­ion, explaining that there is no money for it. The ladies are in tears and someone should come to their rescue immediatel­y.
