Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Metallica will return to the stage later this month, performing a concert that will be screened as part of the Encore Drive-in Nights series on Aug. 29.

The event will be shown at Malco’s Summer Drive-in in Memphis and outside the Landers Center in Southaven.

Marking their return to the stage for the first time since their September 2019 shows inaugurating the Chase Center in San Francisco, Metallica will be the first rock band to appear as part of Encore Live’s drive-in concerts. Previous Encore shows have been headlined by country stars Garth Brooks and Blake

Shelton.

Starting this spring, the Fort Worth, Texas-based Encore developed a new entertainment niche in the COVID-19 era, producing concerts from major stars who’ve otherwise been forced to stop performing and touring due to the virus. Their events have done well, screening in upwards of 300 locations across North America, but particularly so in the Mid-south. According to company officials, Memphis was one of the strongest markets for both the Brooks and Shelton shows.

The Metallica performance will be shot near the band’s Northern California home base and will “subsequently be edited and mixed by Metallica’s award-winning production team to the highest standards possible,” according to a statement from Encore Live.

The announcement of the show also noted that the concert would “feature material from throughout the their near four-decade career and provide Metallica fans with an intimate, unique and truly memorable concert experience.”

Tickets for the event are $115. Each ticket purchase admits one carload of up to six people. In addition, each ticket purchase will include four digital downloads of Metallica’s live album “S&M2,” which documents the group’s two-night team up with the San Francisco Symphony. The record will be released Aug. 28 on the band’s Blackened Recordings.

The Aug. 29 show will screen at Malco’s Summer Drive-in at 8:30 p.m. and again at 11 p.m. The Landers Center showing will take place at 9 p.m.

As with previous Encore Live events, the company will implement safety procedures, with staff members wearing personal protective equipment, enforcing at least six feet of space between cars, using contactless payment and ticketing systems and limiting capacity in restrooms and at concessions.

Tickets for the Metallica show go on sale Aug. 14 via Ticketmaster.
