Part history book, part cookbook, “Miss Daisy Celebrates Tennessee” is a perfect way to commemorate the state’s 1996 bicentennial. Each of the state’s 95 counties is represented with an anecdote by James A. Crutchfield, a writer and historian. He even includes a 96th county called James that survived half a century before going broke and being absorbed by Hamilton County. These are presented alphabetically by county name, mixed in wit h recipes throughout the book. Tennessee food companies, such as Martha White, Clifty Farms, Brock Candy Co. and Turner Dairies, get short profile s by educator Winette Sparkman, as do a number of state luminaries, such as Clarence Saunders, Arthur Seessel, David Crockett and Elvis Presley. There are more than 100 of these sidelights, which also report on attractions, such as Graceland, the Pink Palace and Woodruff-fontaine House. There’s a lot to learn here, even if you eat all your meals out. But if you cook, you’re really in luck.

A college career is suddenly over: Ole Miss won the game but lost a quarterback. Not just any quarterback, either. Superstar Archie Manning’s college football career ended with a broken left arm early in the third period at Oxford yesterday while playing a homecoming game against Houston. The score, if it matters, was Ole Miss 24, Houston 13. It was the second disaster in as many games on the Astroturf. Three weeks ago, Southern Miss upset the Rebels on the same field. Manning’s injury dashed any hope for the Heisman Trophy and jeopardized Ole Miss’ chances of winning the SEC championship.
