BLACKSBURG, Va. – D’eriq King threw for 255 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score to rally No. 9 Miami to a victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
The Hurricanes rallied from an 11point, third-quarter deficit to win their fourth consecutive game and stay very much alive for a spot in the ACC championship game.
Miami scored the game’s final 12 points and held the Hokies scoreless on their final five possessions.
King guided the ’Canes on two long second-half scoring marches. A 13play, 75-yard drive ended with Cam’Ron Harris’ 6-yard touchdown run, and cut the lead to 24-19 with 1:27 left in the third quarter. Miami failed to convert a 2-point conversion.
Miami put together a 10-play, 82yard drive that ended with King throwing a dart to Mark Pope for a 36-yard touchdown to take a 25-24 lead with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter.
NORTH CAROLINA 59, WAKE FOREST 53
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sam Howell threw for program records of 550 yards and six touchdowns, and scored the goahead rushing TD with 4:11 left to help North Carolina rally past Wake Forest on Saturday.
Howell’s 20-yard keeper capped a comeback from 21 down midway through the third quarter for the Tar Heels, tying the program record for biggest comeback in a win.
That was part of a run of 35 unanswered points after falling behind 4524, with Howell and the Tar Heels’ offense rolling nearly all day at a recordsetting pace.
UNC finished with a program-record 742 yards, highlighted by huge performances from receivers Dazz Newsome (10 catches for 189 yards) and Dyami Brown (eight catches for 163 yards) as each hauled in two of Howell’s scoring throws.
