Pair of cities rework holiday events
Collierville and Germantown aren’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic halt all their holiday traditions. Instead, local events are being reimagined.
While Germantown canceled its yearly holiday parade due to the pandemic, the city reworked its other traditions by making some of the events virtual.
Germantown will still light its holiday tree on Nov. 27, but this time people can tune in at 5 p.m. on the Parks and Recreation Facebook page or the City of Germantown’s Youtube channel.
The virtual event will include a performance by the Germantown Community Chorus, a video message from Santa Claus and Mayor Mike Palazzolo reading a classic Christmas story.
The tree lighting will begin at 5:30 p.m., according to the Germantown website.
Germantown also invites city residents and businesses to send in photos of lighting displays for a Holiday Lighting Contest.
Photo entries should be submitted by Dec. 7 to Teresa Martin at Tmartin@germantown-tn.gov.
Judging will be based on the following categories: traditional, traditional doorway, children’s Christmas, religious, lights galore, business, subdivision entrance, zero lot and best of show.
Judging will take place Dec. 8, and the winner will be announced Dec. 9. The winner will receive a holiday gift courtesy of the Germantown Beautification Commission.
Collierville also is getting into the holiday spirit with a variety of events, including free horse-drawn carriage rides and a virtual tour of Collierville Contemporary Club’s home.
The Contemporary Club, an organization for women to support charitable and civic causes in Collierville, will stream a virtual home tour Dec. 12- 24. More information on the tour will be posted on the club’s website.
Every Saturday from Nov. 28-Dec. 19 “Christmas in Collierville” will take place with different events, which will be periodically listed on the town’s website.
On those Saturdays, free horsedrawn carriage rides will be offered from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., weather permitting.
People will also be able to walk among a quarter of a million holiday lights around Collierville’s Town Square during a Holiday Photo Stroll for visitors and residents to take pictures.
Collierville will post holiday event updates on its website or Facebook page.
