Memphis beats FAU, gets first bowl win since 2014

- Khari Thompson

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Riley Patterson kicked the longest field goal ever made in the Cramton Bowl's 98-year-old history.

And that was just the beginning of Memphis' first bowl victory since 2014.

The Tigers (8-3) picked up a 25-10 win over FAU (5-4) on Wednesday night in the Montgomery Bowl.

Senior quarterback Brady White of Memphis finished 22-for-34 with three touchdowns and an interception in his final college football game. He was named MVP.

Memphis held FAU scoreless until early in the third quarter when the Owls scored 10 points in less than two minutes and made it interesting for awhile.

Here are five observations from the game.

Brady White second all-time in passing yards for AAC

White entered the game third on the AAC'S all-time list for passing yards with 10,406. He eclipsed Temple's PJ Walker for second place but fell just short of tying Tulsa's Dane Evans, who holds the record with 10,782.

White leaves as Memphis' school record holder for passing yards, passing touchdowns and quarterback wins.

Breakout game for Javon Ivory

A crisp 5-yard slant-route bought Javon Ivory enough separation to haul in a first-quarter touchdown from White. The Grove Hill, Alabama, native broke free for a 51-yard catch. He finished with seven catches and a season-high 126 yards.

It was the first time the redshirt freshman had more than 100 yards in a game. He entered the game with 230 yards on 16 catches. Ivory is one of seven players on the Tigers' roster from Alabama, including Asa Martin, Peter Parrish and Tyrez Lindsey.

Joseph Dorceus gets first career TD catch

The Tigers had second-and-goal from the 2-yard line with 22 seconds remaining in the first half. Joseph Dorceus lined up at fullback as if he was going to be a lead blocker. But he slipped away into the right-front corner of the end zone as White hit him with a play-action pass for his first career touchdown. It was the third career reception for the 6-foot, 277pound senior defensive lineman. The Tigers went for two and converted.

More touches for Asa Martin

Martin entered the game with 40 carries on the season. Playing on the day before his birthday, he tallied 96 yards on 15 carries. It's the third game in a row that the Auburn transfer reached double-digits in carries.

The Tigers finished with 185 yards on the ground.

Another record for Riley Patterson

Patterson's field goal, a 53-yarder, came midway through the first quarter. It broke FIU kicker Jose Borregales' record of 52 yards, which was set in last year's Camellia Bowl.

It's not the first time Patterson has set records in a bowl game. He set all-time records for most single-game field goals (6) and points (21) in last year's Cotton Bowl.
