The Commercial Appeal

The CA adds extra pages to Sunday edition

-

Harry Freeman, an avid print reader who lives in Midtown, wants more local content, especially on Sunday, in his Commercial Appeal.

Like other CA readers, Freeman, a 10-year subscriber, says it takes him less time than it used to to read the Sunday paper, the biggest newspaper of the week.

Starting this Sunday, April 11, we’re giving Freeman and other readers a reason to have another cup of coffee or two with their Sunday newspaper. We are adding additional pages of content to the Sunday main news section. The added pages, called Sunday Extra, will include a mix of local, regional and national content. We’re adding a weekly feature called “Assignment: Memphis,” which will explore some of the quirky characters and places that make Memphis memorable.

We’re also adding a photo page and more regional stories from Mississippi and we’ll showcase watchdog and investigative stories from The CA and our partners. In addition, you’ll get an expanded Mid-south Memories section, and we’re reinstating the historic photos on Sunday.

“Sunday Extra” aims to build on the strong Sunday content we already have while adding some items you’ve been asking for -- including more locally produced content.

The changes are also a reflection that we want to beef up the Sunday paper for our loyal print readers who expect -- and pay for -- a more robust print edition.

In recent years, the print newspaper has shrunk, especially on Sunday, which has long been our crown jewel. The 24/7 news cycle has made commercialappeal.com and all of our digital platforms the best place to turn for breaking news and late developments, including Grizzlies and Tigers games. The digital platforms also allow us to showcase our journalism through videos, podcasts and photo galleries.

The CA’S online coverage, including our subscribers-only stories, is included with your print subscription. If you haven’t already activated your digital account, you can do so for no additional charge and unlock additional, and timely, stories, video and podcasts.

Whether you are reading The CA online or in print, you’ll get the familiar context, analysis and compelling storytelling from our aggressive, committed newsroom. They know Memphis and strive to tell authentic, relevant stories

Stories like Daniel Connolly’s recent feature on how language barriers and misinformation have conspired to keep Hispanics in Memphis from getting the vaccine. Or Katherine Burgess’ story on some Black churches returning to in-person services on Easter even as others decide to stay virtual because of the pandemic threat.

As part of a regional network of news organizations that includes the Jackson (Tennessee) Sun, The Clarion Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi and the Southwest Times Record in Fort Smith, Arkansas, you’ll also find best-of-the-week enterprise stories from other parts of the Mid-south and our national Network.

The new “Sunday Extra” pages aim to complement the print edition. Our pages in Main News, Viewpoint, M section, Business and Sports will continue.

So whether it’s investigations and watchdog journalism you crave, the comics, the obituaries, a game of Sudoku, compelling opinion-section commentary or the Home Section, Sunday with The Commercial Appeal has just got a jolt of fresh content.
