The Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association announced recipients of its 2021 awards during its virtual Music City Veterinary Conference on Feb. 20. Award winners are nominated and chosen by an awards committee of their peers. The winners included Dr. Susan Moon, who has spent her career at Brooks Road Animal Hospital. She was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the TVMA. Moon is a 1984 graduate of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and began working at Brooks Road Animal Hospital in July 1984. She purchased the practice in 1990. Moon is a past president of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, program chair for the Music City Veterinary Conference, and Alternate Delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Lehman-roberts Co. and its sister company Memphis Stone & Gravel appointed Melissa Negron as human resources generalist and Mike Crowson and Andrew Ray as safety coordinators. Negron has a SHRM-CP certification through Society for Human Resource Management. Crowson previously served on the quality control team of the companies since spring 2019. Former Semmes Murphey Clinic Fellow Dr. Sonia Eden has been named head of adult neurosurgery at Detroit Medical Clinic. She is the first Black woman to hold the role. Dr. Eden lived in Memphis and was a fellow under Dr. Kevin Foley, Semmes Murphey neurosurgeon and board chair. Only about 8% of neurosurgeons are women. Of those women, approximately 33 identify as Black.

Black women in neurosurgery make up approximately 0.5% of neurosurgeons in this country. Dr. Eden is the second Black woman in America to ever receive the title “Head of Neurosurgery” behind Dr. Alexa Canady, according to Semmes Murphey.
